Sigma Rho's Constitution

Preamble

    Sigma Rho Social Club was chartered in 1912 as the Sigma 
    Rho Literary Society and was registered with the State of 
    Tennessee Sigma Rho still remains on the campus of Freed-
    Hardeman University as one of the prominent social clubs. 
    This constitution shall now become the bylaws by which Sigma
    Rho shall be governed.


Article I: Name

    The name of this social club shall remain Sigma Rho, after the
    Greek letters sigma (Σ) and rho (P) as it was originally 
    chartered These Greek letters shall also serve as symbolsfor 
    the club.


Article II: Purpose

    Sigma Rho is a group of Freed-Hardeman students whose 
    primary goals are to strengthen one another spiritually 
    through devotionals and example, to enjoy various social 
    activities together, to build lasting relationships with one 
    another and to use the club as a source of pride by socially, 
    culturally and athletically.


Article III: Colors and Mascot

    The colors of the Sigma Rho Social Club shall be back and 
    gold. The mascot of Sigma Rho Social Club shall be the Sigma 
    Rho Bee.

Article IV: Motto

    Sigma Rho’s motto shall be “Wisdom and Strength” which is 
    the Greek meaning of the letters sigma and rho.

Article V: Membership

    All Freed-Hardeman University students who are in good 
    academic and disciplinary standing are eligible to apply for 
    membership in Sigma Rho.

    Section I: New Members
    The Sigma Rho selection committee will review the 
    membership applicants and select the new members 
    based on the guidelines set forth in the Freed-
    Hardeman University Social Club Handbook.

    Section II: Returning Members
    Those students who were members of Sigma Rho during
    the previous Semester shall be allowed to remain in the
    club by paying their dues in the Freed-Hardeman 
    University Office of Student Services.

    Section III: Miscellaneous
    Any student who forfeits his/her rights to membership
    by failing to pay Club dues shall be forced to enter the 
    draft as set forth in the Freed-Hardeman University 
    Social Club Handbook to regain membership status.

Article VI: Membership Responsibilities

    The following will be expected of all members of the Sigma 
    Rho Social Club.

    Section I:
    Members will be expected to attend all scheduled 
    meetings.

    Section II:
    Any member that accumulates two unexcused absences 
    from scheduled club meetings shall be reviewed by the 
    club officers. The officers will determine
    whether membership shall be canceled.

    Section III:
    Members are expected to participate in all club 
    activities. These activities Include: Makin’ Music, chapel
    skits, intramural sports, community service projects, 
    banquets, and any other event/activity exerted and/or 
    deemed necessary by the club officers.

    Section IV:
    Members are expected to stay in acceptable academic 
    standing. Academic Requirements found in the Freed-
    Hardeman University Social Club Handbook shall be 
    followed.

    Section V:
    Members are expected to demonstrate the behavior and 
    attitude that is becoming of a Christian, Freed-
    Hardeman University student and a Sigma Rho member.

    Section VI:
    Failure to comply with Sections III and V shall give the 
    officers reason to review one's  membership. Should the 
    officers decide to terminate a Member, a two-thirds 
    vote by the officers shall be necessary.

Article VII: Meetings

    Sigma Rho shall meet twice each month as designated by the 
    Freed-Hardeman University Social Club Handbook.

Article VIII: Officers

    All officers, excluding the Interclub Council Representatives,
    shall be elected/reelected by the members at the last 
    regularly scheduled meeting of each semester. Thus, anofficer’
    s term shall last one semester.

    Section I: President
    a. Shall be responsible for the general morale and 
    attitude of the members.
    b. Shall preside over all club and officer’s meetings.
    c. With the assistance of the other officers, shall 
    appoint committees.
    d. Shall be a member of the selection committee.
    e. Shall be responsible for informing the club sponsor 
    of decisions and activities concerning the club.
    f. Shall appoint the Interclub Council Representatives.

    Section II: Vice -President for Men
    a. Shall be responsible for coordinating retreats, New 
    Student Mixer, Greek Week, etc.
    b. Shall be a member of the selection committee.
    c. In the absence of the president, shall reside over the 
    meetings.

    Section III: Vice-President for Women
    a. Shall be responsible for coordinating retreats, New 
    Student Mixer, Greek Week, etc.
    b. Shall be a member of the selection committee.
    c. Shall be responsible for coordinating community 
    service projects and reports.

    Section IV: Sports Captain for Men
    a. Shall represent the club at all sports captain’s 
    meetings.
    b. Shall be responsible for posting eligibility sheets, 
    rosters, and upcoming sports events.
    c. Shall be responsible for making all Intramural 
    athletes aware of the rules set by the Freed-Hardeman 
    University Intramural Staff.

    Section V: Assistant Sports Captain for Men
    a. Shall be represent the club at all sports captain’s 
    meetings.
    b. Shall assist the sports captain with all other duties.

    Section VI: Sports Captain for Women
    a. Shall represent the club at all sports captain’s 
    meetings.
    b. Shall be responsible for posting eligibility sheets, 
    rosters, and upcoming sports events.
    c. Shall be responsible for making all Intramural 
    athletes aware of the rules set by the Freed-Hardeman 
    University Intramural Staff.

    Section VII: Assistant Sports Captain for 
    Women
    a. Shall represent the club at all sports captain’s 
    meetings.
    b. Shall assist the sports captain with all other duties.

    Section VIII: Historian
    a. Shall be responsible for organizing the club 
    scrapbook each semester.
    b. Shall be responsible for compiling the club video 
    review to be shown at the formal at the end of each 
    spring semester.

    Section IX: Secretary
    a. Shall be responsible for keeping records of meeting
    attendance.
    b. Shall be responsible for keeping the minutes of the 
    officers’ meetings.
    c. Shall perform other duties as needed.

    Section X: Treasurer
    a. Shall be responsible for keeping accurate records of
    fiscal income.
    b. Shall be responsible for all interaction with the 
    Freed-Hardeman University Business Office such as 
    deposits, purchase orders, etc.
    c. Shall be responsible for all other financial matters 
    concerning Sigma Rho.

    Section XI: Men’s Chaplain
    a. Shall be responsible for organizing all club 
    devotionals.
    b. Shall be responsible for the spiritual guidance of 
    Sigma Rho.

    Section XII: Women’s Chaplain
    a. Shall be responsible for organizing all women’s 
    devotionals.
    b. Shall be responsible in assisting the Men’s Chaplain 
    in the spiritual guidance of Sigma Rho.

    Section XII: Student Government Association 
    Representative
    a. Shall be responsible for representing Sigma Rho at 
    all meetings and events of the Freed-Hardeman 
    University Student Government Association.

    Section XIV: Interclub Council 
    Representatives
    a. Shall be responsible for representing Sigma Rho at 
    all meetings of Freed-Hardeman University Interclub 
    Council.
    b. Shall be responsible on voting on behalf of the 
    Sigma Rho on motion made at Interclub Council meetings.
    c. Shall be responsible for making the club members 
    aware of issues and policies developed by the Interclub 
    council.

Article IX: Officer Requirements

    Section I:
    a. To be eligible to hold an office in Sigma Rho, a 
    student must be a member of the club for two semesters.
    b. A current upperclassman student that has been a 
    member of Sigma Rho only one semester, may submit an 
    appeal before the officers to be considered eligible to 
    hold an office. Approval of the appeal will be
    granted by a two-thirds vote by the officers.

Article X: Replacement of Officers

    Section I:
    If an officer becomes ineligible for any reason, another 
    member shall be appointed to the vacant office by the 
    remaining officers. Appointment to the office shall 
    require a two-thirds vote by the remaining officers.

    Section II:
    a. If any officer acts in a manner unbecoming of a 
    Sigma Rho to a Sigma Rho officer, his/her behavior 
    shall be evaluated by the other officers.
    b. If found necessary, a two-thirds vote by the 
    officers shall remove the officer from his/her office.

Article XI: Amendment Process

    To amend this constitution, a motion must be made at a 
    scheduled club meeting and
    passed by a two-thirds vote. All amendments must pass at two 
    consecutive meetings to be
    recognized as a part of this constitution.
